Penang Govt Urged By Lawmaker To Prioritise Public Transport Modes Over Undersea Tunnel

Pic: New Straits TimesPic: New Straits TimesGEORGE TOWN: A DAP lawmaker has urged the Penang government to prioritise new public transport modes over the construction of a proposed undersea tunnel that links the island and the mainland.
Pulau Tikus assemblyman Yap Soo Huey stressed, however, that she did not object to the tunnel outright.
However, she maintained that the environmental impact must be looked into first before the mammoth project begins.
“The state government should never prioritise the undersea tunnel without considering other features of the proposed RM27 billion Penang Transport Master Plan (TMP) that includes light rail transit and tram.
“The administration must, instead, make effort to ensure people reduce car dependency as a primary objective of TMP,” she said today.
Speaking at her service centre, Yap clarified that she did not say that “there’s something fishy” in three banners spotted at a few places here yesterday.
“These malicious banners have been spotted in Sungai Ara, Jalan Scotland and near Tesco Tanjung Pinang. However, these banners were not put up by me. These banners are also illegal because whoever put it up had not applied for permits from the city council.
“All banners put up by DAP or my office will carry the council's sticker that shows we have put in the necessary application and gotten the necessary approval,” she said.
She said she would lodge a police report on the banners soon.
