LRT to benefit factory workers

GEORGE TOWN: Having a high-capacity LRT system in Penang that caters to the thousands of factory workers in the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone will certainly help remove much traffic from the roads.
“We have about 165,000 factory workers who are provided transport such as buses and vans to go to work every day in the Bayan Lepas FIZ, which contributes to peak-hour congestion.
“The proposed Bayan Lepas LRT will certainly help alleviate this problem as our workers will be able to commute on the LRT instead,” said Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) Penang branch chairman Datuk Dr Ooi Eng Hock.
Commenting on recent news reports which highlighted that the Bayan Lepas FIZ would be among the key employment hubs served by the LRT line, he said:
“We strongly laud the Penang state government’s move to implement the proposed Bayan Lepas LRT and the Pan Island Link highway as a means to help address this long-standing problem.
“We foresee that with a modern public transport system, not only will our member companies be able to improve productivity, it will also help save cost from transporting workers to and from the workplace.”
The 350-member FMM Penang is one of the most influential business groups in Penang with annual total revenue of about RM50bil. There are about 100 FMM member companies based in the fully-occupied Bayan Lepas FIZ.
“It’s exciting times ahead for Penang. In addition to the Bayan Lepas LRT, we are also in favour of the proposed PIL highway that directly connects the Second Penang Bridge to Gurney Drive,” said Ooi.
“The new highway will bypass Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah and the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway, which our logistics operations rely heavily on,” he said.
