Penang to reclaim two islands in 2018

GEORGE TOWN — Two islands
measuring 1,300 acres and 2,100 acres will be reclaimed as part of the RM27
billion Penang Transport Master Plan
(TMP). With a cost of up to RM8 billion,
the project will be undertaken by SRS
Consortium Sdn Bhd, Gamuda Bhd, Ideal
Property Development Sdn Bhd and Loh
Phoy Yen Holdings Sdn Bhd.
Gamuda Engineering Sdn Bhd's
executive director and project manager,
Szeto Wai Loong said the islands with
flushing channels will have 700 acres of
green space, a 5km beach stretch, a 25km
coastal park, a 30 kmlong waterfront,
sheltered pedestrian walkways and
designated bicycle lanes.
According to Szeto, studies by the
Danish Hydraulic Institute confirmed that
the southern coast of Penang island is most
suitable for reclamation due to its natural
embayment feature with weak tidal
currents and shallow waters with a depth
of about 3m. It is also sheltered from the
effects of tsunamis.
He added that an 800acre island next
to these islands may also be subjected to
further reclamation in future depending on
the state's needs.
The reclamation project is expected to
start in 2018 after getting approval from
state and federal governments.
The Penang TMP would feature a
light rail transit from Komtar to Bayan
Lepas, monorail from Komtar to Air
Itam and Tanjung Bungah, ebus across
the North Channel, bus rapid transits on
the mainland, and a 20km "spine road"
connecting Tanjung Bungah to Penang
International Airport, and Tun Dr Lim
Chong Eu Expressway with tunnels
through the hills.
The cost of the detailed environmental
impact assessments for the road and railbased
public transportation segments,
reclamation, and also feasibility studies
can amount up to RM400 million, which
will be borne by the state. - Kent Tan .
